Code of Practice
Under Development
When families engage the services of a funeral practice in New Zealand, it is
important that they are well informed, safe from exploitation, and
properly cared for. Funeral practices have an important responsibility
for the dignified preparation of a deceased human body and to that
person’s dignified disposal. The development of a "Funeral
Industry Code of Practice" (The Code) will provide a “benchmark” for
best practice in all areas of the funeral industry
What is the Code?
The Code is a document that provides a framework for service delivery by
funeral practices and their agents to the body of a deceased person and
their family. The Code sets out the minimum standards of advice and care
that are expected of funeral practices. The Code also provides a best
practice framework for the training of embalmers and funeral directors
in New Zealand.
How can I get a copy of the Code?
At the present time the Code is being developed by a committee drawn
from the New Zealand Embalmers Association, the Funeral Directors
Association of New Zealand, and the Funeral Service Training Trust.
Upon it's completion you can request a copy of the Code by contacting the
NZEA Executive,
The Funeral Directors Association of New Zealand, or any signatory
funeral practice.
Who does the Code apply to?
The Code applies to all those funeral practices in New Zealand who
become signatories to the code by voluntary association.
How do I know if a funeral practice has signed the Code?
FDANZ maintains a register of all signatories to the Code. Both NZEA and
FDANZ are signatories to the code.
